Alfred's father was Richard Bolton and his mother was Elizabeth Wild. His paternal grandparents were Richard Bolton and Maria Aspinall. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Fred, Arthur, Harry, Annie and Florence. He was the second youngest of the six children.
