Mary was born in March 1843 in Manchester.1  Mary's father was James Birtles and her mother was Ellen Roberts.  Her maternal grandparents were James Roberts and Suzannah Herridge. She had a brother and a sister, named Daniel and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the three children.  She died at the age of 81 in 1924.
