Elizabeth was born in December 1846 in Manchester.1  Elizabeth's father was James Birtles and her mother was Ellen Roberts.  Her maternal grandparents were James Roberts and Suzannah Herridge. She had a brother and a sister, named Daniel and Mary.  She was the youngest of the three children.  She died at the age of 69 in 1915 in Manchester.
