Daniel was born in March 1845 in Manchester.1  Daniel's father was James Birtles and his mother was Ellen Roberts.  His maternal grandparents were James Roberts and Suzannah Herridge. He had two sisters named Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
