Robert's father was Benjamin Bennett and his mother was Elizabeth Bowen. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Bennett and Catherine Jones. He had three brothers and a sister, named Edward, John, Benjamin and Caroline. He was the second oldest of the five children.
