LaPreal was born on April 10th, 1907 in Millard. LaPreal's father was John Charles Bennett and her mother was Susan Ashby. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Bennett and Elizabeth Jane Wood. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Ned, Jess, Barta and Lena. She was the second oldest of the five children.
