Mary was born in December 1863 in Tranmere.¹

Mary's father was Henry Batho and her mother was Mary Fogg. Her paternal grandparents were George Batho and Martha Cartwright. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Henry, Ann, Emma, Susannah, Jane and Lucy. She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.

General Notes
- This could be the Mary Batho that George Brereton married in 1885. However, this Mary was still at home in 1891, single and a dressmaker, aged 27.
