James' father was Richard Barlow and his mother was Alice Seddon.  His paternal grandparents were James Barlow and Ann Roper (Mather). He had five sisters named Eliza, Sarah, Lily, Ada and Hannah.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died in 1902 in Little Bolton.¹
