Gertrude was born on December 8th, 1887.  Gertrude's father was Hendrik Jacobus Phillipus Martens and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Magnus.  Her paternal grandfather was Jan  Thomas Martens and her paternal grandmother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Hendrik, William, Alexander , Anna, Meta and Elizabeth.  She is the second youngest of the seven children.
