His paternal grandparents were John Hallowell (Halliwell) and Elizabeth Marriott; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Holland and Mary. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Samuel, Benjamin, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Hannah and Jane. John and Samuel were twins. He had a half-brother named John.-
