Mary was born in 1881.  Mary's father was H. James Purvis and her mother was Nancy Elizabeth Azbill.  Her maternal grandparents were James Azbill and Mahala Jane Bicknell.  She was the seventh of eight children.  She had five brothers and two sisters, named William Campbell, James Zachary, Joseph G., Thomas R., John I., Elizabeth and Ida J..
