Joseph G. was born in 1872.  Joseph G.'s father was H. James Purvis and his mother was Nancy Elizabeth Azbill.  His maternal grandparents were James Azbill and Mahala Jane Bicknell.  He was the third of eight children.  He had four brothers and three sisters, named William Campbell, James Zachary, Thomas R., John I., Elizabeth, Mary and Ida J..
