Matilda was born in 1849.  Matilda's father was Harrison Azbell and her mother was Mary Ann Emmens.  Her paternal grandparents were John Samuel Asbell and Sarah Bicknell.  She was the oldest of six children.  She had four brothers and a sister, named Harrison, Henry, James D., John and Anna.  She had eleven half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Charles Washington, Henry H., Nathaniel, Wesley J., William J., Edward E., Jessie M., Joseph Daniel, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Wilson, Jeremiah Alonzo, Missouri and Rosetta M..
