John was born in 1864.  John's father was Harrison Azbell and his mother was Mary Ann Emmens.  His paternal grandparents were John Samuel Asbell and Sarah Bicknell.  He was the youngest of six children.  He had three brothers and two sisters, named Harrison, Henry, James D., Matilda and Anna.  He had eleven half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Charles Washington, Henry H., Nathaniel, Wesley J., William J., Edward E., Jessie M., Joseph Daniel, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Wilson, Jeremiah Alonzo, Missouri and Rosetta M..
