Joseph was born in 1820.  Joseph's father was Joseph Asbell and his mother was Malinda Bicknell.  His paternal grandparents were William Asbell Sr. and Elizabeth Moore; his maternal grandparents were Thomas E. Bicknell III and Mary Mathuson.  He was the youngest of six children.  He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, David Warren, John, Nancy and Sarah Ann.  He had seven half-brothers and eight half-sisters, named John, James, William, Ross I., Levi, Ancil D., Wilson D., Lydia, Elizabeth, Ann, Surrilda, Nancy, Louisa, Lucinda R. and Charlotte.
