Arend was born on January 9th, 1701 in Dinxperlo. Arend's father was Derk / Derck ter Beest and his mother was Aaltien Beutink (Beutinck / Boijtinck).  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Derck te Beest and Mechteld Besselink; his maternal grandparents were Jan Beutink and Trijne Rengelink. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Jan, Hendrik, Geesken, Derck, Garrit Willem, Geesken and Maria Engelina.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
