Jan was born on June 15th, 1727 in Zelhem. Jan's father was Roelof Tenck (Tenk) and his mother was Willemken.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrick Tenck and Vrouw / Moeder. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Hendrick, Berent, Harmen, Grietjen, Garritjen, Stijntje and Hendersken.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
