Berent was born on March 2nd, 1738.  Berent's father was Roelof Tenck (Tenk) and his mother was Willemken.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrick Tenck and Vrouw / Moeder. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Hendrick, Jan, Harmen, Grietjen, Garritjen, Stijntje and Hendersken.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
