Stijntjen was born on October 25th, 1750 in Zelhem.1  Stijntjen's father was Gart Jan / Garrit Jan Hoeve / Hoever and her mother was Maria / Marija Wassink / Wossink.  Her paternal grandparents were Jan Hoeve, ter and Vrouw / Moeder. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Willem, Jan, Mijntjen, Marten, Evert, Jenneken, Geertjen, Hendriea, Janna / Jannij, Eva and Anneken.  She was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.
