Hijllo was born on August 24th, 1821 in Meppel. Hijllo's father was Jochem de Vries and his mother was Hendrikje Boerwinkel.  His paternal grandparents were Hijlle de Vries and Geesjen Jans Klos; his maternal grandparents were Feitze Boerwinkel and Geesje Leenders. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Hielle, Hijlle, NN, Geesje, Willemina and Kona.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died before 1834.
