He had four brothers and three sisters, named Jan, Cornelis, Dirk, Dirk, Aagje, Antje and Jannetje.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named Claas, Trijntje, Lijsbeth / Lijsabeth, Grietje, Maartje and Trijntje.
