Gerrit was born on July 30th, 1789.  Gerrit's father was Jan Dinkla and his mother was Aaltje Reusenaar.  His paternal grandparents were Johann (Jan) Heinrich Dinklage and Anna Rebekka Johansson Hendriksen; his maternal grandparents were Jan Ruischenaar and Vrouw / Moeder. He had eight brothers and seven sisters, named Hendrik, Jan, Dirk, Frederik, Willem, Gerrit, Willem, Willem, Antje, Aaltje, Elsje, Elsje, Elisabeth, Elisabeth and Leentje / Lena / Helena.  He was the seventh youngest of the sixteen children.
