Clayton was born on March 26th, 1892 in Norwood, Adelaide, SA.1  Clayton's father was Harry George OCKENDEN and his mother was Clara PLUMSTEAD.  His paternal grandparents were Palmer OCKENDEN and Emma MARSHALL; his maternal grandparents were Henry PLUMSTEAD and Ellen PLAYER. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Palmer, Clifford, Clifford, Evelyn, Everil, Tasma, Doris and Ardis.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.  He died as an infant, Tubercular Meningitis, at the age of 1 on October 15th, 1893 in Norwood, Adelaide, SA.2
