William was born on April 12th, 1902 in Clinton, SA.1   William's father was William Thomas ALLEN and his mother was Alice Jane PAGE.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph ALLEN and Mary Ann HEATH; his maternal grandparents were Alwin John PAGE and Jessie CARRAILL. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Clarence, Alfred, Vera, Gladys, Ivy, Jessie, Winifred and Dorothy.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
