Lilian, known as Lily, was born on December 30th, 1892 in London, Clapton.¹   Lily's father was Ernest George DOWNING and her mother was Alice Eliza GOULDEN.  Her paternal grandparents were George DOWNING and Sarah Ann CARTER; her maternal grandparents were Richard GOULDEN and Elizabeth. She had three brothers and four sisters, named The Professor, Tim, Ernest, Beatrice, Dot, Dinks and Flo.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 77 on February 26th, 1970 in Ilford.
