"James Hourigan, a young native of county Clare, Ireland, who worked on the Rideau Canal for two years, settled in the township probably in the 1830s after having petitioned the colonial government for land. He apparently moved first to Kitley from Smiths Falls, and then to the lot in South Elmsley... Another Hourigan, named Michael, likely a younger brother of James, took up a Clergy Reserve [lot] in the Poonamalie area in the early 1840s."
