Her maternal grandparents are Alferes Joaquim Martiniano Lopes de Oliveira and Isabel Adriana da Natividade Arnaud. She had four brothers and four sisters, named José Joaquim, Joaquim José, Luiz António Cotta, João José, Antónia Jacinta, Felizgarda Narciza Margarida, Jacintha Candida and Ana Matilde Constantina. She is the second youngest of the nine children.-
