Luiz António Cotta was born about 1790. Luiz António Cotta's father is Dr. Agostinho José de Sousa Cotta and his mother is D. Thereza Jacintha Arnaud. His maternal grandparents are Alferes Joaquim Martiniano Lopes de Oliveira and Isabel Adriana da Natividade Arnaud. He had three brothers and five sisters, named José Joaquim, Joaquim José, João José, Antónia Jacinta, Felizgarda Narciza Margarida, Jacintha Candida, Helena Amália and Ana Matilde Constantina. He is the fifth oldest of the nine children.
Luiz António Cotta and Maria Eugénia de were married in a religious ceremony on June 24th, 1810 in S. José, Ponta Delgada, ilha de S. Miguel, Açôres - PORTUGAL. They had two sons and two daughters, named José Joaquim de Medeiros, Joaquim José de Medeiros, Branca Guilhermina and Joaquina Ricarda Augusta.
