Linton Stephens

Linton was born on July 1st, 1823 in Taliaferro, GA. Linton's father was Andrew Baskins Stephens and his mother was Mathilda Marbury Somervilla Lindsey. His paternal grandparents were Alexander Stephens and Catherine Baskins; his maternal grandfather is John R Lindsey and his maternal grandmother was Clarissa Bullock. He had three brothers and a sister, named John Lindsay, Andrew Baskins, Benjamin Bullock and Catherine Baskins. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Aaron Grier, Alexander Hamilton and Mary. He died at the age of 49 on July 14th, 1872 in Sparta, GA.

  He was a distinquished lawyer and a member of the Supreme Court of Georgia on the eve of the War between the States. For several months he commanded a regiment in the field and his courageous example during the days od Reconstruction has forever endeared him to Georgians. In Mentality, eloquence, and integrity, he was the peer of his half-brother and guardian, Alexander Hamilton Stephens. Apparently, Linton was originally buried in Sparta, Georgia. Many years after his death his body was moved to Crawfordville, Georgia, to rest beside his beloved half-brother, Alexander H. Stephens, on the lawn in fron to the latter's home, Liberty Hall.
