William was born in 1790 in Garstang, Lancashire, England.  William's father was William Wilkinson and his mother was Jennet Jenkinson.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Wilkinson and Mary Lucas; his maternal grandparents were John Jenkinson and Jennet Helme. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Edward, John, George, Alice and Jennett.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 51 in 1841.
