John was born in 1788 in Garstang, Lancashire, England.  John's father was William Wilkinson and his mother was Jennet Jenkinson.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Wilkinson and Mary Lucas; his maternal grandparents were John Jenkinson and Jennet Helme. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Edward, William, George, Alice and Jennett.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
