William's father was George Singleton and his mother was Elizabeth Carter. His paternal grandparents were John Singleton and Margaret (Peggy) Seed; his maternal grandparents were William Carter and Margaret Beesley. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Margaret and Martha. He was the youngest of the four children.
