Margaret's father was George Singleton and her mother was Elizabeth Carter. Her paternal grandparents were John Singleton and Margaret (Peggy) Seed; her maternal grandparents were William Carter and Margaret Beesley. She had two brothers and a sister, named John, William and Martha. She was the oldest of the four children.
