William G was born about 1884 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

William G's father was David R Sinclair and his mother was Mary S Gilchrist. His paternal grandparents were Robert Sinclair and Marion Robertson. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Robert, David, Archibald G, Minnie, Isabella G, Margaret, Mary G and Catherine G. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
