Margaret was born about 1878 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Margaret's father was David R Sinclair and her mother was Mary S Gilchrist. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Sinclair and Marion Robertson. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, William G, David, Archibald G, Minnie, Isabella G, Mary G and Catherine G. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
