Marion was born on June 29th, 1834 in Barony, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Marion's father was Robert Sinclair and her mother was Marion Robertson.  Her maternal grandparents were David Robertson and Margaret Buchan. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, Robert, David, Margaret and Jean.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
