Margaret was born on December 16th, 1832 in Barony, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland and her baptism took place there on January 27th, 1833. Margaret's father was Robert Sinclair and her mother was Marion Robertson.  Her maternal grandparents were David Robertson and Margaret Buchan. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, Robert, David, Marion and Jean.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
