Her paternal grandparents were David Melville and Unknown; her maternal grandparents were Robert Ferguson and Grissel Lamount. She had four brothers and six sisters, named Peter, David, Charles, Peter, Lilias, Elspeth, Margaret, Elizabeth, Anne and Jean. She was the third oldest of the eleven children.-
