Robert's father was Dr Andrew Lamount and his mother was Anne Elis. His paternal grandparents were Allan Lamont and Christian Bruce. He had three brothers and six sisters, named James, John, David, Anna, Katherine, Christian, Margaret, Elizabeth and Sophia. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
