Isobel was born on April 13th, 1718 in Auchterderran, Fife, Scotland.  Isobel's father was John Mackie and her mother was Margaret Reid. She had a brother and three sisters, named John, Jannet, Christian and Agnes.  She was the oldest of the five children.
