Edith was born in 1868 in St Johns Wood, Middlesex, England. Edith's father was John Ward Girdlestone and her mother was Ellen Ann Orton. Her paternal grandparents were Rev Charles Girdlestone and Ann Elizabeth Morrell; her maternal grandparents were Dr W Orton MD and Unknown. She had two brothers and a sister, named Charles Lionel, Harold Edward and Mary. She was the second oldest of the four children.-
