David was born on November 12th, 1854 in Leslie, Fife, Scotland and his baptism took place there on November 26th, 1854. David's father was William Dow and his mother was Agnes Fleming.  His maternal grandparents were James Fleming and Margaret Finlay. He had three brothers named James, William  and John.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had two half-sisters named Margaret and Georgina.  He died at the age of 77 on February 5th, 1932 in Macedonia.
