William was born about August 28th, 1691 in Westfield, Kinglassie, Fife, Scotland.  William's father was George Chrystie and his mother was Elizabeth Low.  His paternal grandparents were James Chrystie and Allison Currer. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, David, George, Agnes, Alison, Helen and Janet.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
