David was born about 1674 in Kinglassie, Fife, Scotland.  David's father was George Chrystie and his mother was Elizabeth Low.  His paternal grandparents were James Chrystie and Allison Currer. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, George, William, Agnes, Alison, Helen and Janet.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
