Kathleen was born in 1907 in Taunton, Somerset, England.  Kathleen's father was Mark Challis and her mother was Alice Constance Shire. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Mark, Alfred, Lucy, Kate, Ellen Grace, Margaret, Jesse and Ethel.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
