Alfred was born in 1913 in Taunton, Somerset, England.  Alfred's father was Mark Challis and his mother was Alice Constance Shire. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Mark, Lucy, Kate, Ellen Grace, Margaret, Kathleen, Jesse and Ethel.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
