William was born on September 12th, 1738 in Fordel, Dalgetty, Fife, Scotland.  William's father was John Beveridge and his mother was Grissel (Grisle) Simson (Symsone).  His paternal grandparents were James Beveridge and Catharine Paton. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Alexander, George, Helen and Euphan.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
