Alexander was born on May 23rd, 1744 in Fordel, Dalgetty, Fife, Scotland.  Alexander's father was John Beveridge and his mother was Grissel (Grisle) Simson (Symsone).  His paternal grandparents were James Beveridge and Catharine Paton. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, James, William, George, Helen and Euphan.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
