Thomas was born on August 7th, 1774 in Beath, Fife , Scotland. Thomas' father was David Beath and his mother was Jean Durie. His paternal grandparents were William Beath (younger) and Bethea Balvaird; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Durie and Jean Jamison. William Beath (of Pitgorne) and Marion Ireland were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Andrew, David, Alexander, Robert, John, Anne and Janet.-
