Benjamin was born on May 21st, 1873 in Accommodation Square (no 3), Leeds, Yorkshire.1   Benjamin's father was James John Smith and his mother was Sarah Gale.  His paternal grandparents were John Smith and Mary Germaine; his maternal grandparents were William Gale and Elizabeth Jordan. He had four brothers and a sister, named Charles, Frederick, James, Herbert and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died due to a medical problem, uremia and nephrosclerosis, at the age of 67 on May 2nd, 1941 in Beckett Street (no 123) (St James Hospital), Leeds, Yorkshire.2
